Frequently Asked Questions
When does the SARS tax season open for 2026/2027?
For the 2026/2027 tax year, the SARS tax season for individuals typically opens in early July 2026. Auto-assessments are issued in the first two weeks of July, and taxpayers who are not auto-assessed must submit their ITR12 returns by 23 October 2026 (for non-provisional taxpayers) or 22 January 2027 (for provisional taxpayers via eFiling).
Do I need to submit a tax return?
You generally do not need to submit a tax return for the 2026/2027 tax year if your total salary for the year before tax is not more than R500,000, provided you only have one employer, have no other forms of income, and do not want to claim tax deductions.
What is Provisional Tax?
Provisional tax is a system where taxpayers who earn income other than a standard salary (such as freelancers or those with rental income) pay their income tax in advance. The first payment for 2026/2027 is due 31 August 2026, and the second is due 26 February 2027.
How do I register for SARS eFiling?
You can register for eFiling by visiting the official SARS eFiling website (secure.sarsefiling.co.za) and clicking "Register". You will need your ID number, personal details, and tax reference number to complete the registration process.
