Documents you need before you start

Gather all of these before starting your online or in-person UIF claim — uploading incomplete documents is the most common reason claims are delayed or rejected.

South African ID document Your green ID book or Smart ID card Your own documents
UI-19 form Employer confirmation of employment and reason for leaving — the single most critical document Your employer (they are legally required to provide it)
Banking details Confirms the account where UIF will pay your money (UI-2.8 or bank confirmation letter) Your bank; or complete the UI-2.8 form from labour.gov.za

Unemployment (employer insolvency) Copy of the insolvency notice or court order

Illness Medical certificate from a registered doctor confirming you are unable to work
Adoption Adoption court order / adoption register confirmation
Dependant's benefit (deceased contributor) Death certificate of the UIF contributor; marriage certificate or children's birth certificates
Without a correctly completed UI-19, your claim will almost certainly be rejected. Your employer is legally required to give you this form when you leave their employment. If they refuse or delay, call the UIF helpline on 0800 030 007.
Document format requirements: When uploading documents via uFiling: files must be in PDF or JPG format, maximum 5MB per file, clear and fully legible. Blurry photos or cropped documents are rejected automatically.

How to claim UIF online — step by step (uFiling)

uFiling (ufiling.labour.gov.za) is the official Department of Employment and Labour portal for submitting UIF claims online.

  • 1

Register or log in at ufiling.labour.gov.za

    • If you have used uFiling before: log in with your ID number and password
    • If this is your first time: click "Register" and create a profile using your 13-digit South African ID number, email address, and cellphone number
    • Activate your email address if registering for the first time
  • 2

    Select your benefit type

After logging in, navigate to "Benefit Applications" and choose the correct benefit type: Unemployment, Maternity, Illness, Adoption, or Dependant's benefit.

Choose carefully. Selecting the wrong benefit type means your supporting documents won't match the claim — causing delays and possible rejection.
  • 3

Enter your personal and employment details

Complete all required fields accurately for personal, employment, and banking details.

Critical: Ensure your name, ID number, and bank account name match your official documents exactly. Any mismatch will cause payment failure.
  • 4

    Upload your documents

    • Upload all required documents (see checklist above)
    • Files must be in PDF or JPG format, under 5MB each
    • Ensure every document is clear, fully legible, and complete
    • Reminder Double-check the UI-19 is included — claims without it are almost always rejected
  • 5

    Review and submit

Before submitting, review every entry. Verify banking details, confirm benefit type, check employment dates and reason for leaving. Click "Submit." You will receive a reference number via SMS or email — save this number.

  • 6

Attend appointments and sign the register

    For unemployment benefit claims:

    • SARS may schedule an appointment — attend on the date given
    • Every 4 weeks, log into uFiling and submit a continued claim (UI-6A) confirming you are still unemployed and actively seeking work
    • Missing your 4-weekly confirmation will suspend your payments
What happens after submission:

- Processing typically takes 21–35 business days after all correct documents are received
- First payment: 2–8 weeks after approval, paid via EFT directly into your registered bank account
- Subsequent payments: every 4 weeks (provided you confirm continued unemployment)
Backup if uFiling is unavailable: If uFiling is down, you can email the UI-19 and supporting documents to: [email protected]

Why UIF claims are rejected — and how to appeal

Reason What to do
Resigned voluntarily Unemployment benefit is not available for voluntary resignation. You may still qualify for maternity, illness, or other benefit types.
UI-19 form missing or incomplete Contact your employer to provide/correct the form. If they refuse, call 0800 030 007.
Applied more than 6 months after leaving Apply immediately if you have not yet done so — delay costs you credit days even if still within the window.
Banking details don't match your name Submit a UI-2.8 with a bank-stamped confirmation letter matching your ID name exactly.
Employer not registered with UIF Your employer was legally required to register. Report the employer to the Department of Labour (0800 030 007). You may still be eligible — contact a Labour Centre.
Wrong benefit type selected Resubmit selecting the correct benefit type with matching supporting documents.
Documents incomplete, blurred, or wrong format Re-upload clear PDF or JPG files, each under 5MB.
Not enough contribution history You need at least 13 weeks of UIF contributions in the past 4 years to qualify. If you recently started working, you may not yet have sufficient credits.

How to appeal a rejected UIF claim:

  1. You have 90 days from the date of rejection to appeal
  2. Complete the UI-12 (Notice of Appeal) form — available from your nearest Labour Centre or labour.gov.za
  3. Submit the UI-12 at your nearest Labour Centre with supporting documentation explaining why the rejection is incorrect
  4. If the appeal is unsuccessful, you can escalate to:
    • The CCMA (for dismissal-related disputes)
    • The Public Protector (for UIF administrative issues)
Most rejections are correctable administrative errors. Don't panic — gather the correct documents and follow the appeal process.

What to expect after your UIF claim is approved

Stage Typical timeframe
Documents submitted → assessment complete 21–35 business days
Approval → first payment received 2–8 weeks after approval
Subsequent payments Every 4 weeks
The 4-weekly continued claim:
For unemployment benefits, you must submit a continued claim (UI-6A) every 4 weeks — either through uFiling or by attending your scheduled Labour Centre appointment. This confirms you are still unemployed and actively seeking work.

Missed a 4-weekly confirmation? Your payments will be suspended. Contact uFiling or your Labour Centre immediately to resume.
How UIF calculates your benefit:
Your benefit is between 38% and 60% of your daily income (the income replacement rate — lower earners receive a higher percentage). Your benefit is capped at the UIF remuneration ceiling of R17,712/month (set June 2021; unchanged as of 2026).

If payment is delayed: If more than 15 working days have passed since all your documents were correctly submitted and approved, call 0800 030 007. Have your reference number and ID ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

The fastest way to claim UIF in 2026 is online through uFiling at ufiling.labour.gov.za. Register or log in with your South African ID number, select your benefit type (unemployment, maternity, illness, etc.), enter your personal and employment details, upload your documents (ID, UI-19 form from your employer, banking details, payslip), and submit. You'll receive a reference number by SMS or email. Alternatively, visit your nearest Department of Employment and Labour Labour Centre in person with all required documents. Apply as soon as possible — ideally within 6 months of losing your job.
For all UIF claims you need: your South African ID document, the UI-19 form completed by your employer, your banking details (UI-2.8 form or bank confirmation letter), your latest payslip, and 3 months' bank statements. Additional documents depend on your benefit type: unemployment claims need a retrenchment letter or proof the contract ended; maternity claims need a doctor's medical certificate; illness claims need a medical certificate and doctor's report. Documents must be in PDF or JPG format, under 5MB each, and clearly legible.
The UI-19 is a form your employer must complete when you leave their employment, confirming your employment period, salary, and reason for leaving. It is the most critical document in a UIF claim — without a correctly completed UI-19, your claim will almost certainly be rejected. Your employer is legally required to provide this form to you when you leave. If they refuse, contact the UIF helpline on 0800 030 007.
No. Unemployment benefits are not available if you voluntarily resigned from your job. You can only claim unemployment UIF if you were retrenched, dismissed (not for serious misconduct), your fixed-term contract ended, or your employer became insolvent. You may still qualify for maternity, illness, adoption, or dependant's UIF benefits regardless of how your employment ended.
After submitting all correct documents, processing typically takes 21–35 business days. Once approved, your first payment arrives within 2–8 weeks, paid directly into your registered bank account via EFT. Subsequent payments are made every 4 weeks, provided you submit your continued claim (UI-6A) confirming you are still unemployed. If payment is delayed beyond 15 working days after all documents are correctly received, call the UIF helpline on 0800 030 007.
You have 90 days from the date of rejection to appeal. Complete the UI-12 (Notice of Appeal) form, available from your nearest Labour Centre or labour.gov.za, and submit it with documentation explaining why the rejection is incorrect. Common fixable rejection reasons include a missing or incomplete UI-19 (contact your employer), incorrect banking details (submit a corrected UI-2.8 with a bank stamp), or uploading the wrong document format (resubmit as PDF or JPG under 5MB). If your appeal is unsuccessful, you can escalate to the CCMA (for dismissal-related issues) or the Public Protector.
