RAV01 — The Complete Guide to Updating Your SARS Registered Details
The RAV01 is the form you use to view and update your registered details with SARS — your address, banking details, contact information, and more. This guide explains what you can change yourself on eFiling, what requires a branch visit, and what documents you'll need.
What is the RAV01?
The RAV01 — Registration, Amendments and Verification form — is used to view and maintain your registered demographic details and tax-type-specific information with SARS, on eFiling or at a branch.
Source: SARS — Guide to Complete the RAV01 (GEN-REG-01-G04); SARS — FAQ: What is a RAV01 form? It's pre-populated with what SARS already has on file:
All RAV01 information pre-populates with your existing details at SARS — you're reviewing and updating, not starting from a blank form.
Who can use the RAV01?
| User type | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Individual | Maintains their own registered details on their personal eFiling profile (includes foreign individuals) |
| Registered Representative | Acts on behalf of a legal entity (company, trust, etc.) — a legal entity can only have one Registered Representative at a time |
| Tax Practitioner | Maintains a client's registered details, and can add a new tax product subscription if delegated by the representative |
You must activate your profile first:
A Registered Representative, Tax Practitioner, or Trustee/Administrator must activate their profile before they can update a taxpayer's registered particulars.

What you can change on eFiling
If you're registered on eFiling, you can change selected sensitive details yourself, including:
- Bank details
- Name/surname (or registered name, for companies and trusts)
- Contact details, address details, and other registered particulars
Rather than manually capturing your new bank account details, you now select from a list of your own verified banking details already available to SARS — both on the RAV01 and when filing your ITR12.

If you previously ceased to be a South African tax resident and have since become one again, the RAV01 now lets you indicate your "Reinstatement Date of RSA Tax Residency."

What needs a branch visit
⚠️ Some changes can only be made at a SARS branch, by appointment:
- The nature of the entity or taxpayer type (for example, changing from a Company to a Trust)
- Your Identity number, Passport number, or Enterprise registration number (e.g. ID number, CIPC number, Trust number)
- Bank details, under certain specific conditions
If your eFiling banking-details validation fails:
You'll be asked to visit a branch to validate your banking details in person.
SARS may still ask you to verify eFiling changes in person:
Even after successfully changing banking details on eFiling, SARS may request that you visit a branch to verify those changes.
⚠️ Posted documents are not accepted for banking changes:
Posted originals or copies of documents relating to banking detail changes are not accepted — these require in-person verification.
Banking details — the OTP step
Banking-detail changes made on eFiling must be confirmed with a One-Time Pin (OTP), sent to your preferred communication method.
Source: SARS — Maintain personal details on eFiling vs Branch⚠️ If both your email and cellphone number have changed:
You won't be able to complete the OTP step. Instead, call the SARS Contact Centre (0800 00 7277), or visit a branch (by appointment) to verify your identity in person.
For VAT and Payroll Taxes registration specifically:
Registering for VAT and/or Payroll Taxes requires biometric facial recognition authentication, as either a Registered Representative or an Individual Taxpayer.
Supporting documents you'll need
ℹ️ The key nuance:
Completing the formal tax application/amendment form is no longer always mandatory — but the supporting document for your specific change still is. For example: changing your address requires proof of address; changing banking details at a branch requires full FICA compliance.
If your proof of address is in a third party's name, you'll also need to complete a CRA01 (Confirmation of Entity Residential/Business Address) form, with the third party's own proof of address attached.

Before completing your company's ITR14:
Companies should verify and update their contact, address, banking, and public officer details via the RAV01 before completing the ITR14 — and consult the RAV01 guide in advance to prepare the required documents if a branch visit will be needed.
If you're not registered on eFiling:
You no longer need to visit a branch just to submit supporting documents — these can now be submitted via a dedicated online form on the SARS website.
Customs and Excise clients cannot change banking details on eFiling at all — they must visit a SARS Customs branch directly, using the DA185 form.
